Usage/Coverage

Suitable for: Internal use
Recommended timbers: Lighter coloured timbers e.g. Oak, Ash, Beech, Birch, Maple, Sycamore etc.
Applications: Floors, doors, stairs, worktops, woodturning etc.

Natural Hardwax Oil contains a small amount of white pigment which allows it to be used in two different ways:

  • Method 1 - as a base coat for lighter timbers: If you prefer to protect light timbers whilst changing the unfinished colour as little as possible then Treatex Hardwax Oil Ultra Natural can be applied as a base coat underneath two coats of Treatex Clear Hardwax Oil Ultra to neutralise the warming effect.

  • Method 2 – as a top coat for surfaces treated with Spruce Colour Tone: For a purer white, seal Spruce Colour Tone with two coats of Hardwax Oil Ultra Natural. When Treatex Clear Hardwax Oil is applied on top of our Spruce Colour Tone it can have a slight yellowing effect on the colour.

Please Note:
Hardwax Oil Ultra Natural is not intended to be used in the same method as Clear Hardwax oil and should either be overcoated with 2 coats of
Hardwax Oil Ultra Clear or should be applied as 2 coats over Spruce Colour tone as outlined above. Applying more than one coat of Natural on its own will usually result in a milky/patchy finish.

Coverage

1L will cover approximately 25m² in one coat depending on the timber and method of application.
2.5L will cover approximately 50m² in one coat depending on the timber and method of application.

Preparation/Application

Preparation

Ensure sufficient product is purchased before you use Hardwax Oil Ultra Natural, mixing more than one tin together if needed. We also recommend a small trial application to see what the results will be like.

When using the product as a base, sand the surface using 80-120 grit sandpaper to ensure it is smooth and all previous finish has been fully removed. Ensure all contaminants are removed as this can lead to uneven absorption and weaker performance of the natural wood preserver. Finally, make sure the surface is dry and the hardwax oil is at room temperature.

If you’re using it as a top coat for surfaces treated with Spruce Colour Tone, make sure you have applied a coat within the last 24 hours and make sure the previous coat is fully dry and free of contaminants.

Application

For a base coat for lighter timbers, brush or roller on a thin coat of Hardwax Oil Ultra Natural. Leave it for 10 minutes and then slow buff with a soft pad to remove the excess. It may dry with patchy white marks if the excess product is not removed. Allow to dry by maintaining the warmth and ventilation for around 3-6 hours and then seal with two coats of Treatex Hardwax Oil Ultra Clear.

If you’re using it as a top coat, seal by using a brush or roller to apply the Treatex Hardwax Oil Ultra, leaving it to dry for 3-6 hours. Then apply a second coat and allow it to dry overnight.

How to Apply: Treatex Hardwax Oil Ultra ‘Natural’ and Colour Tone Ultra ‘Spruce’

In this video we show the difference between our Hardwax Oil Ultra Natural and Colour Tone Spruce and the different ways that they can be used. Products used...

Tips

  • Hardwax Oil Ultra Natural is not a finish in its own right and should not be used on its own.

  • If Natural Hardwax Oil is applied too thickly the drying time will be increased. To speed up drying time raise the room temperature and increase air flow by opening doors, windows and using a fan. The Treatex Ultra formula relies on airflow to aid drying.

  • Treatex rollers and brushes are available. Alternatively, use a short microfibre roller or good quality brush. Wet brushes and rollers can be cleaned using white spirit.
